Gold Nears $4,100 as Dollar Strength Weighs

Last Updated on October 6, 2026 by Deon

Gold prices faced renewed selling pressure on Tuesday falling to a two-month low because a strong US Dollar and high Treasury yields continued to pull demand. Gold, measured in XAU/USD is now close to the $4,100 level and traders are watching closely for a possible break below this support.

Gold has declined even though expectations for a Federal Reserve rate hike at the October meeting have eased. Markets are less confident about near-term tightening after US employment data. Yet high Treasury yields and steady US Dollar strength have kept Gold from recovering.

Strong Dollar Keeps Gold Under Pressure

The US Dollar remains one of the obstacles for Gold. The Greenback recently reached its level since April 2025 making dollar-priced commodities more expensive for international buyers.

Gold has also struggled because Treasury yields remain high. Higher Treasury yields raise the opportunity cost of holding a -yielding asset such as Gold. This relationship has become especially important as long‑term US Treasury yields have climbed sharply.

Although expectations for an October Fed hike have declined markets still see a possibility of additional rate increases later this year. This continues to support the US Dollar and limits the potential for Gold.

Fed Outlook Remains Important

US data has given mixed signals. Recent payroll figures showed employment growth while inflation indicators have also moderated. These developments lowered expectations for a rate increase.

However concerns about inflation remain. The ISM Services prices‑paid component recently reached its level in more than four years suggesting that price pressures may stay uncomfortable for the Federal Reserve.

Investors will therefore pay attention to the upcoming FOMC meeting minutes. The minutes could provide clues about how policymakers view inflation, employment and future interest‑rate decisions.

Fed officials speeches will also be important because any indication that policymakers remain concerned about inflation could support Treasury yields and the US Dollar.

Geopolitical Risks Provide Limited Support

Gold benefits from geopolitical uncertainty because investors often seek safe‑haven assets during periods of market stress.

However recent geopolitical developments have not been enough to reverse the pressure on Gold. Ongoing tensions in the Middle East remain a risk while reports of further escalation involving Israel and Iran have increased uncertainty.

At the time changes in oil prices and global bond markets are influencing expectations for inflation and interest rates. If higher oil prices increase inflation concerns investors could expect rates to stay higher for longer creating another challenge for Gold.

$4,100 Becomes the Key Technical Level

From a perspective Golds short‑term outlook remains bearish. Gold has moved below important moving averages while the Relative Strength Index remains weak without yet reaching deeply oversold territory.

The immediate level to watch is $4,100. FXStreets analysis identifies the $4,098 area as a Fibonacci retracement level. A convincing break below this zone could strengthen the setup and expose Gold to further losses.

The next major downside area could be around $3,936, near a previous cycle low.

On the upside Gold would first need to recover the $4,226 area. A stronger resistance zone follows around $4,254, where the 100‑period SMA on the four‑hour chart is located. Further resistance can be found near $4,316 and $4,406.

Gold Outlook

Gold remains vulnerable while the US Dollar stays strong and Treasury yields remain high. A sustained move below $4,100 could increase selling pressure and shift attention toward the $4,000 region and lower levels.

On the hand a recovery above $4,200 would weaken the immediate bearish setup. A sustained decline in Treasury yields and a softer US Dollar would give Gold a foundation to recover.

For now traders are likely to remain focused, on the $4,100 support level US Treasury yields, Dollar movements and the upcoming FOMC minutes. These factors could determine whether Gold extends its decline or attempts a short‑term rebound.
